Students Run Up Meal Tabs In Natrona County

CASPER, Wyo. (AP) ― An official in the Natrona County School District says students owe more than $60,000 in unpaid meals.

Mike Pyska, food service director, says the district is in a tough spot because officials want to feed students but the district is also responsible for paying for the food.

Students in Natrona County elementary schools are always given a meal. Meals that aren't paid for are added to a student's account and follow the student through middle school and high school.

Dean Braughton, principal at CY Junior High School, says sometimes students with no money will sit in the cafeteria, and a teacher will spot them and send the student through the line to eat.

Officials say families who can't afford school meals should apply for the Free and Reduced Price Lunch program.
