Coroner: Eliminate Some Autopsies, Save $10,000

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) ― Routt County Coroner Rob Ryg has a suggestion for saving about $10,000 a year: eliminate unnecessary autopsies.

Ryg says a mandate from a former district attorney for the north-central Colorado county requires autopsies for all unattended deaths, even when the cause of death is clear. He says the $1,000 autopsy isn't necessary in those cases.

District Attorney Elizabeth Oldham said last week that her office doesn't require autopsies in all unattended deaths in other counties and is willing to discuss the policy with Routt County authorities.

But Steamboat Springs police Capt. Joel Rae cautioned that autopsies are an important tool in investigations.
