Denver's First Freeze, Snow Can Be In September

With the beginning of fall right around the corner the changes in color aren't the only thing seen this time of year. The Denver metro area can also experience its first freeze and snow in September.
The earliest snow ever seen in Denver was Sept. 3, 1961. The latest date of the first snowfall occurred on Nov. 21, 1934.
Over the last 8 years, the first measurable snow hasn't been in September but in October and November, and that's pretty typical -- the average date is Oct. 19.
The first measureable snow in last 8 years is as follows:

- October 22, 2007
- October 18, 2006
- October 10, 2005
- November 1, 2004
- November 5, 2003
- October 25, 2002
- October 5, 2001
Besides snow, temperatures in September can get quite chilly -- Denver's first fall freeze was recorded Sept. 8, 1962. The latest date Denver has ever experienced freezing conditions was Nov. 15, 1944.
While Denver's average first freeze occurs Oct. 7, over the last 8 years September has seen it drop below freezing.
