If a spring storm knocks out power, many families aren't prepared to live without it for a few days. Keeping just a few items around the house and making the home "emergency ready" can get a family through.
Severe weather season is almost here and the Denver Fire Department is spreading the word to get ready by putting together a family emergency kit.
"We're so power-oriented in America, where you can plug anything in and it works. Well if it doesn't, this is what this kit is all about," Phil Champagne with the Denver Fire Department said.
Denver fire stresses in an emergency situation without any power, things like a flashlight that doesn't run on batteries is helpful. Just crank it and there's instant light.
"If you had a prolonged power outage for any period of time, say a tornado, thunderstorms, floods; you know any of these particular issues, (it's the) kind of a kit that the family would want," Champagne said.
The kit might also include things like a battery-operated radio, a cell phone charger and enough water
.
"A gallon of water per person to last at least three days."
Denver fire hopes junior firefighters at Amesse Elementary will take the preparedness message home to their parents. They say flashlights are better than candles.
"Whenever you have a major catastrophe like a tornado, you have a lot of gas leaks in the area. If you have enough of a concentration of natural gas you're going to have an explosion or a fire. So we're trying to look for alternative solutions to keep people away from candles."
Denver fire suggests changing smoke detector batteries when changing the clock for daylight savings time every year.
