Monsoon flow may keep Colorado on the thunderstorm track for the rest of the summer.
The updated forecast for our southwest monsoon shows more moisture flowing into our state and especially eastern Colorado through the rest of the summer. That means more showers and thunderstorms for the Front Range and the Denver metropolitan area.
The Climate Prediction Center outlook for August has most of Colorado above normal for precipitation with the exception of the Four Corners area.
In the three month outlook: August, September, and October combined shows all of central and eastern Colorado above normal for precipitation with western Colorado near normal.
The circulation pattern started early this year with a subtropical high waffling over eastern and southern Texas teaming up with occasional upper level lows from the west coast to help push subtropical moisture into the central Rockies.
This early and strong pattern may be caused by a strengthening "El Nino," which is warming of the ocean water off the coast of South America.
In a typical year the monsoon season for the southwest United States ends on Sept. 30.
The word "monsoon" simply means a reversal of wind direction.
