DENVER (CBS4) ― Get ready! The month of May can be a rollercoaster ride for weather. This month, Coloradans can see everything from snowstorms, thunderstorms, hailstorms, ice storms, to storms that produce tornadoes.

May typically kicks off the severe weather season. Nasty afternoon thunderstorms can begin bubbling up, sometimes fueled by moisture from the Gulf of Mexico, crashing into cold air still pushing in from Canada or from the northern Pacific Ocean. These storms can bring heavy rains, hail and even tornadoes.

This is also the month for water! On average, May is Denver's wettest month of the year. It is also, tied with November as having the least amount of sunshine. We have a lot of clouds at this time of year.

As we have already seen this year, it does snow in May, but, not a lot. In fact, last year we had no snow at all this month. The average snowfall is 1.3 inches. Once we get to May you would think we're safe from the cold. That is not the case. Late season frosts can blast into the Front Range, and the average date of the last freeze is May 5. But, believe it or not June 8 is the latest day Denver has seen a freeze.

Even with all of this active weather, we still sandwich in some pretty good weather here and there. Many days in May often climb into the 70's and 80's for afternoon temperatures. Happy May!
