Tree experts have been swamped with calls to clean up fallen trees from last Monday's storm.
A crane was brought in to remove a huge cottonwood tree that fell on a mobile home near I-225 and Colfax. The 60-foot tree crushed the home. It wasn't a casualty of Monday night's major storm, but toppled over during a routine thunderstorm.
"When I looked at the tree trunk, the bark was all missing and the roots on one side were dead, there was no bark, it was just dead heart wood exposed, and whenever you see that, you know the roots are rotten. There's probably decay like insects inside," said Jay Austern, High Plains Arborist.
Trees with decay should be taken down.
Other signs to look for are little piles of sawdust from burrowing insects, or large cavities your hand can fit inside.
