Fire Ban Enacted In Parts Of Western Colorado
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (AP) ―
Fire restrictions are in place in parts of western Colorado.
Bureau of Land Management officials said Wednesday that no open burning will be allowed on the agency's land in Mesa, Eagle, Garfield counties or parts of Pitkin and southern Routt counties. Campfires are only allowed if they are built in designated fire grates in campgrounds.
Mesa County also adopted the same restrictions on private land within its borders.
Fire restrictions aren't in place on the Grand Mesa, the Uncompaghre National Forest or the White River National Forest. However, the BLM said the fire danger below 8,000 feet has been increasing because of hot weather and dying vegetation.
Violators of the fire bans can face imprisonment and fines up to $100,000 as well as being forced to pay for firefighting costs.
