It wasn't exactly a needle in a haystack, but for a New York woman, what was found was even better. A set of wedding rings were tossed in the trash, but alert sanitation workers were able to locate them, CBS station WCBS-TV reported.
Could you imagine finding a set of wedding rings and other jewelry in 10 tons of garbage?
"A miracle, a miracle," Bridget Pericolo said.
The 77-year-old is happy to have her rings back, after a bout with the trash. It began when she left her rings, a necklace and earrings in a Styrofoam cup.
"And then she put her knee-high stockings in the cup, covering the jewelry," husband Angelo Pericolo said.
She left it on the coffee table, and the next morning, her husband was cleaning up.
"I took the cup and threw it in the garbage, not realizing jewelry was in the cup," Angelo said.
The trash went into a bag, which the couple always ties at the top.
That bit of information helped locate the right bag after the mistake was noticed. Amid tons of trash, Parsippany sanitation workers at a transfer station finally ripped open the right one.
"We found the cup, found one of the rings, then a necklace, earrings and the last ring," worker Joe McGee said.
Now the burning question, who was wrong, the husband or the wife? She blames him.
"Leave the cup on the table; leave it there," Bridget said.
"Well, Bridget should have brought the jewelry upstairs where it belongs," Angelo responded.
While that dispute may last for years, both agree, the sanitation workers saved the day.
"I was happy we found it for them. They've been married 55 years, so it was nice," McGee said.
Parsippany sanitation workers said they once were able to retrieve a person's false teeth that had been mistakenly discarded.
