World's Best Pizza Comes From N.Y.

NEW YORK (CBS) ― A Staten Island, N.Y. pizza shop is now known for having the "world's best" slice after winning a big competition in Las Vegas.

CBS station WCBS-TV in New York recently got a chance to visit Goodfella's Brick Oven Pizza in Dongan Hills.

When asked how his pizzeria conquered a global field, owner Sal Russo said it's all about dedication. Russo outcooked 65 competitors from six countries to take the top award. The contest was sponsored by "Pizza Today" magazine.

"We don't just collect a paycheck," Russo said. "We actually put our hearts, actually put our hearts into whatever we do."

Russo is tops when it comes to pizza making. His paddle was the heavy hitter at last week's International Pizza Expo in Las Vegas. And here's why. It's the "smokin' goodfella.'"

"I got flour and olive oil in my blood," Russo said.

He starts with semolina dough. Then there's the roasted pepper cream sauce, and some fresh Italian ground sausage. A little twist with the roasted tri-color peppers, some caramelized onions and a secret ingredient.

Toss a little Romano cheese and then slide it into a wood-burning oven.

And that oven is a key. The entire pie cooks in about three minutes.

"With the roasted peppers and the roasted pepper cream sauce and when the wood is burning you can actually smell everything coming together," Russo said. "When this pizza comes out of the oven you're going to say that's Italian."

When it's done, basil adds a little extra spice and a sprinkle of cheese makes it pizza perfect.
