Mom And Baby Born In Denver Library Meet The Press

DENVER (CBS4/AP) ― Dominique Trevino says she was taking the bus to a pregnancy checkup Tuesday morning when she realized the baby would arrive before she did.

"As soon as I started walking I felt pressure, and soon as that pressure started coming, I was like, 'Yeah, she's trying to come out,'" Trevino said.

Sitting next to her was Vittoria Whittsett, who immediately called for paramedics and told the bus driver to pull over next to Denver Public Library.

"So I asked her what was going on and she said she was going to have the baby. And I was like, 'Well yeah, that's obvious.' She goes, 'No, right now,'" Whittsett said.

The 18-year-old got off the bus and gave birth just inside the door.

Trevino showed off her healthy new daughter, 5-pound, 12-ounce Sariah Unique, at Denver Health Medical Center on Wednesday.

Library staff helped Trevino till an ambulance arrived. Paramedics say the baby was halfway out when they got there.

Zachary Laugheed, a library security guard, gave Trevino his jacket and helped her into the library, which hadn't yet opened for the day.

"I was scared. I didn't know what was going on," said Trevino.

"I'm still on-line with the paramedics, 911, and she tells me that I need to take her clothes off," Whittsett said. "So we get her clothes down and the guy hands me these gloves, and I'm going, 'I can't do this.' Thankfully the paramedics walked in the door and I was like, 'Yeah!'"

"She was just coming out when got there; we cut the cord and like I said, wrapped her up and she was great," paramedic Maryanne Foerster said.

It's the second time in two days a Denver-area baby arrived before moms were ready. Firefighters in Westminster delivered a baby in an ambulance along U.S. 36 on Monday when the outside temperature was 2 degrees.

Authorities say Cassandra Garcia and her baby Daniel are both healthy. Read the story: Baby Boy Born In Blizzard On Boulder Turnpike
