When Bob Beauprez described life after an unsuccessful run for Colorado Governor, there was no trace of bitterness in his voice. In fact, he said he feels like the luckiest man in the world.
"We've been having a lot of fun," said Beauprez. "We bought a ranch near Steamboat Springs, where we're raising buffalo. It's about a 20-year fantasy of mine. I've raised a lot of cattle, but I always wanted to know if I could raise buffalo."
Beauprez said he was frustrated he didn't have enough time in Congress to work on policy. These days, he delves headlong into policy issues on his Web site, "A Line of Sight."
Beauprez also released a new book,
A Return to Values; A Conservative Looks at His Party. The book is a call to action for the Republican Party to return to its core principals.
"I thought, what a sad indictment that people don't see a difference (between the parties), because, I, of course, believe there is a signifcant difference, not in the issues that need to be addressed, but in the solutions," Beauprez said.
The book is laced with commentary about modern society and values. Beauprez explained how he believes it all ties into the current state of the economy.
"I think we end up being the great nation we are. We go through our periods, but at the end, we right the ship. I believe in the greatness of America. Where else would you rather be?" Beauprez said.
Beauprez grew up working on the family dairy farm, then later turned around a failing bank with his wife, Claudia. Beauprez has seen tough times in Colorado, but has also seen the other side of those times. That gave him some insight into beating this recession.
"Some nights, we went to bed at night thinking, 'I don't know what we'll do,' but you get up and work hard and the solution is there in front of you; get some more education, trust your instincts, follow your passsions, network," said Beauprez. "Get up in the morning and go do the right thing."
He believes only the will of the American poeple can pull us out of the recession. Beauprez pointed to lessons from the Great Depression.
"It wasn't because government saved the day, it was because good people came together, one by one, community by community, and kind of did what made sense, did the right thing, and said, 'we're gonna make it.' We will again."
In terms of his own political career, Beauprez has stayed active and did not rule out another run for office.
"The only decision we've made is that we've not said no. Yes is still very much an option," Beauprez said, with a smile.
