More companies are turning to Twitter and other social networking tools to build their business. Hundreds of big companies, like Whole Foods and Jet Blue, are already using those networks.
Smaller Colorado companies say it can build their brands, too. New Belgium Brewery in Fort Collins has a Twitter team. It's made up of four employees who spend part of their workday twittering.
The quick messages are called "Beer Tweets." Web developer Kurt Herrmann says it's a unique way to communicate with customers.
"You can not just sit there and let people tweet at you without responding back to them. It's a two-way street," Herrmann said.
New Belgium's Twitter team says having quick but genuine Twitter conversations about customers is about building relationships.
"We have 1,675 followers, which is pretty modest, but it's growing really fast. You know the more you engage, the more you show people that you're willing to engage. It kind of propagates exponentially," said Twitter team member Adiran Glasenapp.
Kevin Houchin is a Fort Collins-based attorney who says social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook lead people to his Web site where there's much more detail about his legal expertise.
"You use your Twitter to drive people to Facebook and to the blog. You use YouTube videos if you're doing that to drive people to the blog, everything comes into that hub where hopefully you're capturing names and building lists and getting those kind of relationships set up," said Houchin.
He also says for many businesses and self-employed professionals, if you're not using these social media tools, you are missing a crucial way of finding and keeping clients.
