Ireland Pulls The Upset, Wins Churchill Cup
DENVER (AFP) ―
Ireland A won the Churchill Cup rugby union tournament with a convincing 49-22 final victory over England Saxons.
Declan Kidney's side ran in six tries overall and led 20-12 at half-time in sweltering heat after tries from Devon Toner and Isaac Boss.
Another try 24 seconds into the second half by Sean Cronin increased Ireland's edge.
Felix Jones, Johne Murphy and John Muldoon all notched tries after that before Tom Varndell gave the Saxons a parting shot with a consolation try.
Jonathan Sexton kicked three penalties for the Irish and converted three tries, and Fergus McFadden converted another two.
Ben Woods also crossed in the second half for the Saxons, who had four penalties from Stephen Myler.
"England are a very good team - I'm not going to say we smashed them in every facet, but we had the hunger," Kidney said.
"I'm a little bit shocked," admitted Saxons captain Phil Dowson. "We'll have to have a look at video, but it's not going to be pretty in terms of set-pieces."
Argentina Jaguars defeated Canada 44-29 to claim third place earlier Sunday.
Benjamin Urdapilleta scored 24 points, scoring a try and booting five conversions and three penalties. Captain Agustin Creevy, Francisco Merello, Tomas De Vedia and Leonardo Senatore also scored tries for the Jaguars.
