DU Point Guard Gets Ripped, Becomes Bodybuilder

DENVER (CBS4) ― Former University of Denver point guard Phil Heath is 265 pounds of pure muscle. At 5 foot 9 inches, he is the reigning 2008 Iron Man Pro Champ and was on the cover of Flex magazine.

Heath entered bodybuilding 5 years ago. As an amateur he was undefeated, and now as a pro, he has won three out of five competitions.

Being in the gym 4 hours a day, a person would think Heath could lift anything, but he says that that simply isn't true.

"A lot of people want to know how much weight you can lift. They usually say 'So, what's your bench (press)?' or 'How much can you curl?' or something like that -- and it's not how much you can lift. It's really trying to stimulate the muscle fibers to give yourself that look of 'Wow, Heath could probably lift this, or that' which we probably couldn't," Heath told CBS4's Reggie Rivers.

The bodybuilder's goal is to eventually become Mr. Olympia, and he has the muscles and the super-low body fat to get there.

"I've been under 3 percent quite a few times, and that's when you start looking like an anatomy chart, which I like. I've always thrived on being ultra ripped and having veins, lines places you've never seen before," said Heath.

Heath was a senior at DU in 2001. At that time, he was listed at 180 pound. At lot has changed in 7 years with his body, but his on-court skills still remain. He showed Rivers a thing or two at the gym, hitting swish after swish while Rivers was defending.

Heath's strength in college was defense. "My coach was nuts about defense. I had really good defense and I was able to shoot the three, but the good thing was is that I was also pretty athletic. I could dunk a basketball back then."

The much larger leg muscles Heath sports now apparently haven't hindered his vertical leap-ability. In CBS4's on air report, Heath stands still underneath the hoop, jumps and grabs the rim.

Bulging Muscles & Piano Keys

When you see a guy like Heath all flexed up on the cover of a bodybuilding magazine, a lot of stereotypes naturally run through your head, but if Heath ever shows up at your house and asks about the piano, he's there to play it, not move it.

Heath took piano lessons when he was a child and still plays a lot. His mother wanted him to share his gift with big audiences.

She got her wish ... sort of.

Heath is a gentle sort of giant, but you still shouldn't insult his wife and make him angry. He related the following funny tale to Rivers.

"Some kids were riding their bikes in the street and my wife gave them a little beep-beep, like 'Hey, can you move,' and the kids didn't get it, so she rolled down the window and said 'I'm trying to get you guys to move so you don't get hit by a car,'" Heath said.

"Then they said a few nasty words. ... I jumped out of the moving car and chased them down. These were teenage kids and didn't expect to see me running down the street.

"You can say whatever you want about me, but you don't pick on my wife."
