Hall of Fame quarterback John Elway joins CBS4 Sports Insiders Vic Lombardi and Gary Miller on their ESPN Radio 1600 show every week to talk Broncos. His Monday Morning Quarterback segment can be heard at 8 a.m.

DENVER (CBS4) - Despite practicing with the Broncos first team all week in preparation for Sunday's game against the Chargers, quarterback Chris Simms was benched after making only four pass attempts.

That move left John Elway a bit perplexed.

"To me it felt like a quick trigger, even though when Kyle came in it gave them a little bit of a boost," referring to Simms' quick exit from the game the Broncos eventually lost 32-3.

Coach Josh McDaniels decided Kyle Orton was healthy enough to play on his sprained ankle on Sunday, so Elway was curious why he didn't just start him.

Elway said he "respects" Simms and isn't sure if he has much of an NFL future at this point.

"Obviously it has hurt him not having played for 3 years," Elway said. "He'll be here for the rest of the year, there's no question about that, but where he goes from here is hard to say."

Simms hadn't started a game since September 2006 when he was playing for the Buccaneers and wound up needing emergency surgery to remove his spleen.

Elway said the four straight losses the Broncos have suffered through after starting the season with six straight wins needs to be put into perspective.

"The thing is about football no matter what is you're never as good as you think you are and things are never as bad as you think you are so hopefully the Broncos can look at this and get pulled out of this," he said.

Elway said he thinks the Broncos aren't playing with the same confidence and speed right now that they were. The little things aren't going right, either -- a prime example being rookie running back Knowshon Moreno's fumble on the 1 yard line as he was nearing the endzone.

After Moreno's fumble receiver Brandon Marshall scolded Moreno, something Elway says he never did as a player.

"There was never a time in a situation like that where I said something (critical) to a guy. ... You know Moreno's intention was not to fumble. He had two hands on that ball until he tried to reach it out (across the path of the endzone)," Elway said.

Elway said Moreno made a rookie mistake and will get better at holding onto the ball.

As for the next game, Elway said McDaniels and the team's veteran leadership have a very hard task ahead of them.

"It is very difficult to pull a team out of a nosedive like the one they're in right now, especially if you've never been through it," Elway said.
