ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) ― Kicker Jason Elam has rewritten Denver's record books and now finished his first novel, which combines football and what he calls the central conflicts between Christianity and Islamist radicals.

Elam and Steve Yohn, a Denver area pastor, will release their first novel "Monday Night Jihad" in January. Published by Tyndale House, the suspense thriller combines football and a spy adventure in which the hero tries to thwart a terrorist plot.

"It all started about 10 years ago, when I'd go speak to people, they just liked hearing football stories and my brother kept getting after me to write a book," Elam said.

Finally, Elam figured if he wove in suspense, religion and sport, he'd have an intriguing seller "with all the things that are happening in this world and the radical side of Islam going on right now and just dealing with the war on terror, in Iraq and Afghanistan, just how passionate people are on either side of the aisle of that."

"My hope is to ... just make people think," Elam said. "And I think I've pulled it off and I'm pretty excited about it."

He also weaves in a lot of behind-the-scenes stories from his football career.

"I tried to bring out a lot of stuff that the fans don't get to see every day, a lot of the inside-the-locker room stuff, things that happen off the field, things that happen here during practice, just the camaraderie side of things," Elam said. "The things the typical fan isn't going to see."

Elam, who has scored more points for one team than any player in NFL history, said he's already working on a sequel.

EXTRA POINTS: Denver's loss snapped a league-best 10-game home winning streak in September, dating to a 2001 loss to Baltimore. ... The Broncos' 47 yards rushing was the fourth-lowest total in the Shanahan era. ... Jay Cutler had a TD pass for his eighth consecutive game, extending the longest streak by a Broncos QB at the start of a career.
