Rocky Mountain Half Marathon
Alan Culpepper crossed the finish line of Sunday's Rocky Mountain Half Marathon with a time of 1:07:57. Nicole Chyr of Englewood was the first woman across with a time of 1:28:38.
Culpepper, an elite runner from Lafayette, Colo., who was running the race for the first time, told CBS4 he was pleased with the course, which he described as scenic.
"I really enjoyed the beginning parts through the city, and then we made our way out to Sloan's Lake. The toughest part of the course for sure was by Invesco Field (at Mile High). That was a bit of a surprise, that big hill ... and the wind, but all in all it was really good."
Culpepper is training for the Olympic 1000m qualifying trials and said this is one of the races that he could fit into his schedule.
"I race well at altitude and I know how to balance ... how to get a lot out of the effort without getting tired from it," Culpepper, 35, said last week.
The next two people to cross the finish line after Culpepper were Jason Parks of Broomfield (1:14:00) and John Nichols of Denver (1:15:19).
Kristin Fryburg of Boulder won the McDonald's Women's 8k, which takes place in conjunction with the half marathon. Her winning time was 29:23. Highlands Ranch's Cassie Ficken (32:29) finished second and Maria Klemenc (35:12), of Albuquerque, finished third.
Race organizers said they had nearly twice as many racers this year as last year.
