The Colorado State University Rams have little time to celebrate their 41-28 come-from-behind victory on Saturday night. Up next this Saturday is a home date with Mountain West conference powerhouse Texas Christian University.
Saturday's win over UNLV was significant for the Rams; it's the first time CSU has had a winning record since October 2006. A small triumph for the once-proud Rams but not one that head coach Steve Fairchild is going to let get blown out of proportion.
"I'm on less of a roller coaster than everyone else. I'm not going to let a good game against UNLV make me or anybody else in this program think we've arrived," Fairchild said. "We still have a lot of work to do."
The coach knows what he speaks of. TCU has compiled a pretty good resume through the first half of the season. The Horned Frogs are 5-1 with their only loss coming at the hands of top-ranked Oklahoma. They also lead the nation in rushing defense (22.3 ypg) and total defense (208 ypg).
"They are an extremely fast defense that feeds off each other" Fairchild said. "They're well-coached, simple in scheme, usually the mark of a good defense. It'll be a big challenge, no question. They are definitely the most talented defense we have played so far."
TCU has dominated CSU since joining the MWC three years ago. The Horned Frogs have won all three meetings including last year's 24-12 victory in Fort Worth. In that game, TCU held CSU to only 55 yards rushing. The Horned Frogs will be hard pressed to duplicate that effort again on Saturday. CSU Junior running back Gartrell Johnson is coming off a career high performance with 191 yards rushing and three touchdowns.
Fairchild knows the yards won't come as easily this weekend but he's still excited to get a crack at one of the top teams in the Mountain West.
"TCU is arguably, with other teams, one of the elite teams in our conference and I've said all along that's where I thought we were in the late 90s," Fairchild said. "Now they're the benchmark and this is a good opportunity for us to measure our program so to speak. We will catch them, that's our desire here as a football program over the coming games and years. They know they're pretty good and like I said, at one point around here that's how we were and we will be again."
