CSU Fans Snatch Up New Mexico Bowl Tickets

FORT COLLINS, Colo. (CBS4) ― Many Colorado State University Rams football fans are headed south for the holidays. Thousands of fans have snatched up tickets for the New Mexico Bowl against Fresno State since they went on sale Monday.

A trip to Albuquerque sounds pretty good after going the previous two seasons without a bowl game and then starting this season with the uncertainty of having a new head coach.

"I've followed CSU football ever since I came to town in 1963," Dr. Bob Ellis said. "Albuquerque in December; it should be about 6 degrees warmer than Fort Collins in December."

"It's what, a seven hour drive from here? Six hour drive from Denver," said Paul Kowalczyk, CSU Athletic Director. "It's a great location, weather will be nice."

In three days fans bought more than 2,200 of the university's 6,000 tickets to the New Mexico Bowl after watching the Rams finish the season with six wins -- the best record ever for a first-year head coach at CSU.

Coach Steve Fairchild says the season and the bowl game are a good start.

"It's good and it symbolizes that we've got the program heading in the right direction," Fairchild said. "It gives us good momentum in recruiting and I think our kids are excited. It gives us good momentum feeding into our off-season program."

Rams players say they're happy to hear fans are ready for a bowl game road trip.

"It's going to be a good experience if we can get a lot of fans out there and get a lot of our supporting fans to cheer for us," defensive tackle James Morehead said.

CSU will play Fresno State on Dec. 20.

If the Rams win it'll be the first overall winning season for the seniors on this year's team.
