Hall of Fame quarterback John Elway joins CBS4 Sports Insiders Vic Lombardi and Gary Miller on their ESPN Radio 1600 show every week to talk Broncos. His Monday Morning Quarterback segment can be heard at 8 a.m.
DENVER (CBS4) - The Denver Broncos are undefeated and the surprise team of the NFL three games into the season. John Elway says he's not sure if there's a better offensive line in the league right now after watching the Broncos 23-3 win over the Oakland Raiders on Sunday.
"With the way that they are playing, especially running the football (Sunday), 215 yards rushing the ball and protecting Kyle (Orton)," Elway said.
Elway said he was impressed by how the offensive line didn't miss a beat after guard Ben Hamilton and tackle Ryan Harris went down with injuries. Hamilton aggravated a hamstring injury and was replaced by Russ Hochstein. Harris injured his shoulder and was replaced by Cherry Creek High grad Tyler Polumbus.
Elway says he doesn't think those types of replacements hurt a quarterback's confidence.
"I think that you realize that it's part of the game and guys are going to go down. That's why there's a 53 man roster and the 45 guys who put on those shoulder pads week in and week out are so important. It really doesn't matter who you are because at some point in time you're going to have to contribute."
Elway says that's why players have to be ready at all times.
"As a quarterback you have enough on your mind that you really don't worry about those guys coming in. They're going to be prepared and do the job."
Hamilton and Harris will be evaluated this week and it's not clear if they will be available to play against Dallas on Sunday.
Elway says offensively the Broncos are starting to get into a groove and they are continuing to play great defensive football as well, but the schedule hasn't been a true test for the defense yet. In the next three games they face offenses led by Tony Romo, Tom Brady (Patriots) and Phillip Rivers (Chargers).
"I'm not sure if the last two weeks are a great test as far as seeing other offensive teams ... the Raiders and the Browns are probably the two worst offensive football teams, other than the Chiefs," Elway said. "So we're going to start getting into the meat of the schedule and we're going to find out exactly where they are defensively ... there's no question they are much, much better than they were last year."
The Cowboys come to Invesco Field at Mile High on Sunday for a 2:15 p.m. kickoff against the Broncos.
