Hawkins Fate Will Be Announced On Thursday

BOULDER, Colo. (CBS4) ― CU Athletic Director Mike Bohn tells CBS4's Vic Lombardi that an announcement on the future of football coach Dan Hawkins will be made on Thursday after he visits with the coach.

Bohn, who's been in Hawaii with the men's basketball team, plans on returning to Boulder on Thursday morning. At that time he will meet with Hawkins and then announce his decision.

KOA radio reports that Bohn has already decided to retain Hawkins.

On the coach's Wednesday night weekly radio show, he would only say, "we are excited about playing Nebraska" when asked about the KOA report.

Tuesday night, CBS4 was the first to report that Hawkins meet with University Chancellor Phil DiStefano and left the meeting with the understanding that he would not be fired. CBS4 also reported that Hawkins told his assistants that he'd be returning for another year.

On Wednesday, a University spokesperson confirmed to CBS4's Vic Lombardi that Hawkins recently met with DiStefano but insisted that no decision was made at the meeting and that Athletic Director Mike Bohn would make the final determiniation.

Calls to Hawkins went unanswered.

The Buffs have struggled since Hawkins replaced Gary Barnett in 2006. They've played in only 1 bowl game and have compiled a 16-32 record including a 2-19 record on the road.

Speculation about Hawkins' job status has been running wild in recent weeks. A month ago Hawkins told reporters that he was going to be at CU  for a long time.

A few days ago, several members of the school's Board of Regents said they would approve a buyout of Hawkins contract if DiStefano and Bohn decide to fire the coach.

Then on Monday at the weekly Hawkins news conference, the coach didn't directly answer questions about his job, saying only that he's excited for the Nebraska game and that everything's fine.

If CU wanted to terminate Hawkins, his buyout would cost the school more then $3 million. He's under contract until Dec. 31, 2012.
