Denver Broncos wide receiver Brandon Marshall suffered a cut in his hand and was bleeding after a confrontation with his girlfriend that led to his March arrest, now the cause of an NFL investigation, according to Atlanta police.
Marshall refused treatment for his injury when police arrived at his condominium in downtown Atlanta after the March 4 argument, according to a police report, first obtained by The Denver Post. Marshall told police his girlfriend's sister had attacked him with a knife, later saying he had cut his hand on a piece of glass during the fight.
Marshall's arrest two days later was his third in a year, and his latest run-in with the law has put him under the league's scrutiny. NFL spokesman Greg Aiello confirmed Wednesday the league was reviewing Marshall's March 6 arrest, for which he faces a misdemeanor battery charge for allegedly hitting girlfriend Rasheedah Watley.
He was released from jail the next day after posting $1,000 bond.
Under the NFL's Personal Conduct Policy, Marshall could be suspended because of his multiple arrests and alleged incidents. He's due in court in September for a trial on a drunken driving arrest on October 2007.
Marshall has faced domestic violence charges involving Watley before. The previous time, Marshall was arrested after Watley said Marshall had used his vehicle to block her taxi as she tried to leave after an argument at his home in Highlands Ranch on March 2007. The case was later dismissed.
The March 6 fight between Marshall and Watley was triggered by a text-message she received on her cell phone from an ex-boyfriend, Watley told police. She alleges that Marshall began to slap her, and Watley's relatives told police they witnessed the fight, according to the report. An officer wrote in his report Watley had several cuts on her lips, which she said were from Marshall hitting her.
Marshall and his attorney, Harvey Steinberg, have said Watley's allegations against Marshall are an attempt to blackmail him.
"We have e-mails and we have letters demanding hundreds of thousands of dollars in exchange for silence. We haven't done anything in terms of domestic violence. We're not paying any money," Steinberg said.
"It's akin to a shakedown," he added.
Fulton County solicitor general Carmen Smith said no charges have been formally filed against Marshall.
Broncos spokesman Patrick Smyth said Marshall's injury stemming from the alleged fight with his girlfriend was separate from the arm injury Marshall said he suffered later that month. In that case, Marshall severed an artery after he said he fell into a television set while wrestling his brother in Orlando, Fla.
Watley and her family declined to comment through their attorney, David McGill.
