Serena Williams wins her eighth career Grand Slam event singles title by trouncing Maria Sharapova, 6-1, 6-2, in the final of the Australian Open. Williams is ranked No. 81 in the world entering the tournament after an injury-plagued 2006, but she defeats six seeded players en route to the title.
