A Delta II rocket carrying NASA's Phoenix Mars lander lifted off in Florida on Aug. 4. The Lander was designed and built at Lockheed Martin's plant in Jefferson County. If all goes as planned, the spacecraft will land on the Martian Arctic plains next May and gather and analyze soil and ice samples. The initial contact with the spacecraft was made by Lockheed Martin's Flight Operations team at its Space Systems facility in Waterton Canyon in Jefferson County. The Phoenix Mars Lander was launched before dawn from Cape Canaveral, Florida. The lander won't be looking for evidence of life on Mars. It will be looking for traces of organic compounds, which would be a possible indicator of conditions favorable for life. (Photo by Bruce Weaver/AFP/Getty Images)
