Family Questions Whether Teen Was Street Racing

WESTMINSTER, Colo. (CBS4) ― The family of a teen from Westminster said Sunday they don't believe he was street racing when he crashed and died Friday night. Police said witness statements point to street racing as being a factor.

Matthew Herrera, 18, crashed into an SUV at 92nd and Newton when witnesses said he was racing another car and lost control.

"What we know is that there was a witness to the accident that saw two vehicles, the one that was involved in the accident, the Sebring, and then the other vehicle that was involved, the white sedan, racing down the roadway," said Stephanie Topkoff of Westminster police.

Herrera's family and friends put up a small memorial at the scene of the crash Sunday. The family said it wants more evidence to prove Herrera was street racing.

"Matt Herrera was a good kid," said Fred Herrera, Matthew's grandfather. "He did not smoke, he did not drink. He was not the type of person that would be out here drag racing like they're saying."

Investigators said they don't believe the race was an organized event, but rather a spontaneous incident. They are asking for any witnesses to contact authorities.

Police were still hoping to hear from the driver of the white sedan that was reportedly racing Herrera's Sebring.
