Ski Resorts: Holiday Season Saved By Great Snow

 Ski Report: Trails & Conditions
BRECKENRIDGE, Colo. (CBS4) ― Colorado ski resorts say great snow helped save the holiday season as skis and snowboards flew off the shelves.

"It's much stronger than what we originally anticipated," John McMahon with the Breckenridge Resort Chamber said.

Businesses in Breckenridge were pleasantly surprised with their holiday turnout. Six weeks ago the town predicted a major decline in revenue.

"As it turned out, New Year's was about 95 percent occupancy," McMahon said. "(It was) down a little bit, but not nearly the impact we originally had thought."

The numbers were strong, but towns in the high country relied heavily on attractive packaging and travelers making last-minute decisions.

"New Year's was probably stronger than Christmas. We had a lot of last minute bookings; people were literally booking two days in advance," McMahon said.

But the ski industry isn't in the clear yet for this season. Towns could see a lull following the holiday and more aggressive ad campaigns are expected to follow.

"That's what marketing is for, not necessarily for good times, but for times like this that you have to get your brand across."

More snow is expected in the high country this week.
