Boulder Company Specializes In Green Motorcycles

BOULDER, Colo. (CBS4) ― A new company in Boulder plans to beat the rising cost of gas with a "high-performance," all-electric motorcycle.

The company is EVC, the Electric Vehicle Company; the product is "Volta," high performance all-electric motorcycles.

"Performance wise, this bike will do zero to 50 in about 4.5 seconds," said Bill Kent, EVC President.

EVC will be producing a series of six different motorcycles that start at around $8,000.

"In the series you have top ends that range from about 120 to 175 miles per hour," Kent said. "These are designed to be a daily commuter vehicle."

The cycles are powered with 20 lithium ion batteries that are under the seat. When they are fully charged, the bike can go up to 75 miles with the performance of a regular gas-powered motorcycle.

Kent said the cycles go 100 miles on about $1 of electricity. The new Volta cycles will be available this summer.

The motorcycles even have onboard computers that let the driver program a speed for peak efficiency.
