Police: Liquor Store Being Sued Sold To Minors
Man Sold Alcohol To Underage Men Who Later Died
JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. (CBS4) ―
More than half of the businesses checked in a recent liquor compliance sting in Jefferson County broke the law by selling alcohol to minors.
The sheriff's office checked a total of 38 businesses and 20 of them sold alcohol to minors working for the sheriff's department.
"We're going to continue this type of enforcement," Jim Shires with Jefferson County Sheriff's Office said "We take it extremely seriously."
Among the offenders was Marina Pointe Liquors at Wadsworth and Chatfield Road. The liquor store already had its license revoked in 2006 after 20-year-olds Brandon Nichols and Paul Ondrish were killed in a car crash. They had purchased liquor at that store.
Parents of the young men who died told CBS4 they are shocked that the same store was caught in a sting.
"Outrage, disbelief that under the circumstances they would still be continuing to break the laws," said Brandon's mother, Amy Nichols.
"What we went through, no one should have to go through, and they shouldn't still be open," said Paul's mother, Patti Ondrish.
The parents are suing the store.
"The lawsuit is aimed at really shutting them down and getting them out of the business of providing alcohol to underage people," said Paul's father, Frank Ondrish
The liquor store had maintained one of the youths was using a phony, albeit expired, underage identity.
The owner of Marina Pointe did not respond to a request for comment.
