Students Display Artwork On Louisville Snowplows

LOUISVILLE, Colo. (CBS4) ― The city of Louisville is displaying the artwork of its young residents on city snowplows this winter.

Their paintings have become sort of a traveling display in what has become one of the snowiest periods in recent memory.

Students at Louisville schools painted seven 12-foot blades in their art classes this past fall. Now, they get to see their artwork at work as the plows clear off snow on roads around the city.

Louisville Public Works commissioned the art.

"I think everybody in the community appreciates seeing them," said Darwin Brownson with Public Works. "If nothing else it helps them to look out for the plows and be more cautious."

Cindy Murphy, an art teacher at Louisville Elementary, said students love the project.

"They volunteered to do it; I don't have to go beat the bushes," Murphy said. "I explained to them that when the snow flies and they scrape rocks off the road, it may be gone."

Murphy said the artists are okay with that fact, since they believe the paintings aren't just pretty, but practical.

"It's doing something helpful," said Issy Hillam, a 6th grader at St. Louis Catholic School. "Its picking up snow."

The city of Louisville has had a snowplow art project for 4 years. It was originally started in Greeley.
