Bad Economy Hits Fitness Biz, Gyms Offer Deals

DENVER (CBS4) ― For those with New Year's resolutions to take care of their health and work out, they may have more incentive to do so than ever before.

Gyms across Colorado are offering great deals right now to try and build up their memberships. Some gyms say that they didn't see the typical number of people signing up around the holidays as they have in the past.

People have been more conscience of their money and not as willing to spend it on a gym membership, but some of the deals out there right now offer big discounts.

"On one particular membership we've reduced our initiation fee by more than 50 percent," Bob Drake with Cherry Creek Athletic Club said. "On another membership we're having added value. We're throwing in some personal training sessions, a massage, a nutritional consultation; all the little tidbits that help people get started on the right track for the new year."

Even big chains like 24 Hour Fitness have specials going on. It's offering a discount on its signup fee, monthly membership and not requiring any contracts. It's also offering a big discount on monthly membership costs if people pay for a year or two in advance; and throwing in discounted sessions with personal trainers.
