Skier Shows Off Camera Skills In Colorado Film
DENVER (CBS4) ―
The weekend of Feb. 29 through March 2 skiers will gather at Winter Park for the 33rd Annual Wells Fargo Cup. It's one of the major fundraisers for the National Sports for the Disabled and among the fierce competitors on the slopes will be some of the world's top skiers with disabilities.
One of them is Marc Romero. He began his career as a disabled skier in the 1980s first as a racer but soon found himself fascinated by free skiing and eventually wanted to try his hand at filmmaking. That led to the movie "Heroes of the Slopes" which chronicles the stories of skiers with disabilities.
"I think one of the things my film shows is how we've progressed," said Romero. "Like using your prosthesis in the ski area. Before you used to 'crutch around,' but the prosthetics have gotten a lot better now. The sit skis have gotten so much better the line between the able-bodied version and the disabled version is very small indeed."
Those advances in technology mean the newly-disabled can often find themselves back on skis very quickly. "We have injured soldiers and a lot of them are hitting the slopes a lot quicker. It's a great way to get back out there if you have a lot of athletic desires and skills. It's a perfect fit," said Romero.
Romero gets many of the skiers to tell their stories. "Erik Weihenmayer, the blind guy who summited Mount Everest, is a friend of mine and he gives a great description of what's it like to ski blind."
And Romero shares his own experience of disabled skiing by taking the camera along for the ride once he succumbed to the allure of free skiing.
"I just kind of gravitated towards free skiing, the bumps, the steeps and the powder and as I did that I realized that a lot of free skiing is involved with camera work, with films and the ski movies."
