Denver Skyscraper Goes Green By Recycling

DENVER (CBS4) ― An entire downtown Denver skyscraper is going green by trying to recycle as many waste products as possible. The building's management company has also retrofitted much of the infrastructure.

"All lights retrofitted, all things behind scenes, like HVAC system, everything has been retrofitted to be energy efficient," said Mindi Romoff of Transwestern Real Estate, which manages the building at 1125 17th Street.

The building recently switched to Altogether Recycling, letting offices like MGA Communications recycle just about everything.

"It's been a big behavior change, because our trash cans where we used to toss everything away is now a recycling bin," said Doug Magee of MGA Communications.

Magee said the kitchen is the only place where there is a trash can.

The dumpsters help tell the story of success. Workers are now recycling about 60 percent of their office waste while the amount of actual trash is way down.

"People looking for office space are looking for this," said Romoff. "It's become a big marketing tool which brings in future customers."

By replacing the lights throughout the building with compact fluorescent bulbs, the cost was paid back by energy savings in just 3 years.
