Two Dozen Hotels Offer 'Mile High' Room Rate

DENVER (CBS4) ― With a tight economy during this holiday season, hotels in Denver are encouraging people to take "urban vacations" and offering special deals to lure in guests.

The Mile High Holidays campaign includes 24 hotels that are participating in a special $52.80 room rate, which references Denver's mile high elevation.

Vicki Bramble and her daughter are just the type of guests the Oxford and other hotels are targeting.

"It's like we're on vacation and coming to this hotel is fabulous," said Bramble, who lives in the southeast part of the Denver metro area.

The Oxford Hotel is all decked out for the holiday season, just in time for Vicki Bramble and her daughter.

This is the fourth winter holiday season in a row that Bramble has spent at the downtown hotel.

Hotel owners know value-conscious consumers are looking for better bargains this year.

"Otherwise I probably wouldn't come down -- the rates make a huge part into it," Bramble told CBS4.

Oxford Hotel manager Ed Blair said he hopes it won't be too difficult to attract Coloradans to downtown Denver this winter. Between 35 and 40 percent of the hotel's guests already come from the state.

"We sell all the great clubs, the shows, the restaurants that people can catch, the sports venues, the museums -- it's an entire urban vacation within a short drive from your home," Blair said.

In addition to all the decorations, shopping and special events, for the first time Denver's major sports teams have also signed on to the Mile High Holidays campaign. The Avalanche and Nuggets are offering special discounts through the program.
