Man Jumps From 3rd Floor Of City & County Building

DENVER (CBS4) ― A man ran through a third-floor window of the Denver City & County Building Wednesday morning as he was set to appear before a judge on assault charges. He was handcuffed at the time and fell to the ground below.

Fire Department Lt. Phil Champagne said Josephus Haynes, 41, was lying on a grate outside the building when crews arrived.

Haynes was seriously injured and taken to the hospital, Denver Police spokesman Sonny Jackson said. He remains in critical condition.

Police said it wasn't clear if Haynes was trying to escape or harm himself.

There were several witnesses in the courtroom and outside the building.

"He's sitting in custody and they pulled him to get in front of the judge, he was just sitting there and turned around and went head first out the third-story window," said Ty Berrien, one of the witnesses. "He broke the window first time, head first, it was crazy."

Witnesses said Haynes landed on his head.

"It was crazy. I've never seen anything like that," witness Elmoses Blackwell said. "The man was lying on the iron crate right up on the floor. He wasn't moving for about 15 to 20 minutes at all. He was just laying there."

A couple of streets in the area were closed for a time during the investigation.

CBS4 discovered Haynes has a long wrap sheet.
