Broomfield Challenge Matches Fitness With Fun
Written for the Web by CBS4 producer Libby Smith
DENVER (CBS4) ―
On a Friday night at the Broomfield Community Center, tables are covered in cloth, drinks are on ice, and a disc jockey is testing his sound system. The scene is set for a dance that's designed to get Broomfield residents moving.
"Tonight's event is really to show people that there are different pieces to activity and getting on the move. It's a dance event this evening to show them it's not about the weight-room, it's not about the fad dieting, its about being active and making healthy food choices," said Shawn Gorman, coordinator of America on the Move Broomfield.
Several dozen couples were ready to take a turn on the dance floor, and Lucinda Dummer was ready to show them how. In the 10 years that Dummer has been a dance instructor she's seen the popularity skyrocket.
"They are amazed at the way their body changes, their muscles start toning up, their endurance goes up. It's just a wonderful aerobic experience, but you're having so much fun while you're doing it you don't think about it," she said.
The dance event is part of a bigger "Get Fit, Stay Fit Community Challenge" that America on the Move is putting on in Broomfield. The 8-week event includes prizes for the teams and individuals that lose the most weight, add the most steps, and show the most health improvement. About 350 people are taking part in the challenge and get access to weekly weigh-ins, healthy cooking demonstrations and free days at the Recreation Center.
"I'm getting pretty old and I'm fairly healthy and I want to continue to be as healthy as I can for as long as I can. I figured this was the way to do it," 78-year-old Walt Eldridge said.
Walt Eldridge and his wife, Shirley, took part in the challenge. They increased their walking, used a step counter and went to many of the presentations.
"I like it very much. It's really helpful," Walt said.
"Really very nice, very, very nice," added Shirley.
So whether participants choose walking or waltzing, challenge coordinator Shawn Gorman said he hopes people understand that healthy living is about making small changes in your lifestyle.
