Music Dir. Loses 62 Pounds, Plans Half Marathon

DENVER (CBS4) ― The music director for the Central City Opera plans to run the Colfax Half Marathon Sunday after making a life changing decision to go from husky to thin.

John Baril, 46, has conducted more than 100 performances in his 16 years with the opera.

But over the last 18 months, he's achieved something that is perhaps more impressive.

"I've lost about 62 ponds now," Baril said.

After 30 years of being overweight and feeling unhealthy, he's become a dieter's hero.

"I'm proud of myself everyday and I never used to be," Baril said.

He was first inspired by a favorite bumper sticker.

"The bumper sticker said 'if you can't change your mind are you sure you still have one,'" Baril said. "So I thought okay John, it's time for you to change your mind about yourself."

A friend encouraged him to join Weight Watchers online.

Baril also started exercising 30 minutes a day and built up to training for the half marathon.

"It's never too late you can always do this," he said. "You can break all those habits and you have to and it's a good thing and you must do it cuz the rest of your life depends on it."
