Officials Check Boats At Aurora Reservoir

AURORA, Colo. (CBS4) ― Officials at most of Colorado's reservoirs are inspecting all boats as concern grows over the spread of zebra mussels.

Boats were being inspected at Aurora Reservoir Sunday to make sure they weren't carrying the zebra mussels.

The mussels first turned up last January at the Pueblo Reservoir. They were most likely latching onto a boat that was on an infested lake somewhere else.

Boaters are also being more careful.

"Especially this summer when they made a heightened awareness of it, I clean my boat, make sure it's dry, it's in the garage, it's covered," said Bob Wengert.

The mussels can cling to each other and reproduce very fast. They can infest and clog waterways and ruin beaches, boats and the ecosystem of the lake.
