Mexican Wrestlers To Promote CDOT Seatbelt Program

DENVER (CBS4) ― The Colorado Department of Transportation is launching a new campaign geared toward Hispanic males and intended to highlight the importance of seatbelt safety.

Called Cita Con La Vida, CDOT's new program is a response to high numbers of Hispanic motor vehicle accidents.

"The Hispanic population in Colorado is growing," CDOT spokesperson Pam Hutton said in a prepared statement. "Tragically, this growth is also seen in the higher numbers of Hispanic deaths and serious injuries on our highways."

The program seeks to address the cultural differences that may lead to these high numbers.

The Cita Con La Vida Community Tour will feature live Lucha Libre wrestling matches across the Denver Metro Area during which actors from El Centro Su Teatro will perform skits stressing the important of seatbelts in saving lives.

Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for Hispanics from 1 to 34 years of age and are the sixth leading cause of death for Hispanics of all ages. The current death rate for Hispanic children between ages 5 and 12 is 72 percent greater than for non-Hispanic Anglo children.

The principal event will be held Sunday at the National Western Complex and will feature professional wrestlers from Mexico. Tickets can be purchased at any Azteca Ranch Market, Tacos y Salsas restaurant, or at the Cinema Latino in Aurora.
