Alan Culpepper Will Run In Denver Marathon

Nation's No. 2 Elite Marathoner Will Compete In The Half Marathon

Prepared for the Web by CBS4 Producer Raetta Holdman
DENVER (CBS4) ― Elite runners from around the world will hit the streets of Denver in the Denver Marathon this October. Among the runners who will participate in the half marathon is local favorite Alan Culpepper, race officials announced on Tuesday.

Track & Field News ranks Culpepper as the No. 2 marathoner in the nation.

Culpepper is a two-time Olympian with a personal best of 2 hours, 9 minutes, 41 seconds for a marathon. That's an average of 5 minutes a mile for the 26 mile course. He is preparing for the New York City Marathon, which is a training run for the 2008 Olympic Marathon Trials.

Culpepper runs less than 10 events each year so he can focus on training and building up longevity for each event.

He said he is excited about running in the half-marathon in Denver.

"As a marathon runner and a Colorado resident, I am excited to run in a world-class running event that presents great running challenges that are exclusive to the Mile High city," Culpepper said in a news release.

Culpepper is from Lafayette, Colo., and is a graduate of the University of Colorado. He was part of the CBS4 Team covering this year's Bolder Boulder.

Other elite runners who will run in the marathon or half marathon include Mike Korir who was born in Kenya but now lives in Ohio. He won the Philadelphia Marathon in 2002 and 2004 and the Mercedes Marathon in 2003.

Franklin Tenorio is also registered for the Denver Marathon. He is from Ecuador and is a two-time Olympian and won a bronze medal in the 1999 Pan Am Games

The inaugural Denver Marathon is set for Oct. 15. The course highlights Denver's communities as it stretches through urban neighborhoods, retail districts, and city parks.
