Foster Children Shadow Colorado Gov. Ritter

Pair Follows Governor On 'Take Your Child To Work Day'

DENVER (CBS4) ― The United Way worked to make sure foster children got to take part in "Take Your Child to Work Day" on Thursday by having foster children shadow well-known Coloradans.

Tony Corley and Laterra Cole grew up in foster care. The two young people were able to spend time with Gov. Bill Ritter at the State Capitol.

"No, I've never been to take-your-kid-to-work day," said Corley. "Honestly, so it's kind of weird."

Ritter signed bills while he and Cole were there, including one to fund child welfare services.

"Foster care is such a lonely experience," said Cole. "So it's nice to come here and see, 'oh my God, people know that I exist.'"

Ritter's top staff members also solicited advice from the pair about how the state can improve the foster care system.

The United Way foster child program is part of the organization's Bridging the Gap project which helps older foster youth become independent, financially stable adults.
