Parents and children were at the stores over the weekend doing back-to-school shopping -- that includes thrift stores; and many are asking for help because of the recession.
ARC Thrift Stores have seen almost 100,000 additional customers in the past 6 months. Donations have risen about 10 percent in this same time period, but the thrift stores say it's not enough to meet customer demand.
The biggest demand right now is for household items as well as men's and children's clothing, and back-to-school supplies.
The ARC's 19 thrift stores would like help from everybody.
"We're up this year but we're trying to get people out to do even more donations for back-to-school shopping, and upcoming winter needs," said Lloyd Lewis, ARC President and CEO. "We just appreciate the public's support and would like to have people come out and help out a little bit."
Every year, the ARC Thrift Stores take in about 55 million pounds of unwanted clothing and household items. All of the proceeds from ARC stores help people with developmental and physical disabilities, including finding them jobs, housing and medical services.
