It's no secret that a big part of finding a job is who you know, so some of Colorado's working professionals have found ways to grow contacts lists. They're helping both potential employees and employers beat the recession.
Lew Visscher is a chief financial officer. Tracie Meier also has a job. They are professionals who have taken on a second job helping others in their profession find work. They're using the Internet to help people network and they're spending their nights and weekends volunteering their time.
It began as a way to network with others in the same profession. But in this economy it was clear many needed the network to find work.
"So I kind of thought to myself, 'How do I do this? How do I get people and jobs connected?'" Meier said.
For Meier that meant starting up a Web site where human resources professionals could post and look for jobs.
"I have a niche market," she said. "I can get it right to their in-boxes, it's a win-win."
For Visscher it meant starting a mailing list for finance and accounting pros.
"I've probably added 200 people over the last 60 days to the list and it's a real sign that times are tough," Visscher said.
So far Visscher has about 2,200 people awaiting his emails.
"I think what I give people is some hope," Visscher said.
"I feel like I'm doing a good service. I'm giving back," Meier said. "So it's the first time I actually get to wake up in the morning every morning and say, 'I give back to my profession.'"
And it's working.
Dax Craig with Valen Technologies said his company needed a chief financial officer.
"They said, 'Oh, you've got to get on Lew's List," Craig said. "Got on Lew's List and I probably had 50 high-quality people in two weeks
you put something up like that on Monster and you get 2,000 resumes."
The pick of the litter for Valen Technologies is their new CFO, Andrew Murray.
"Would we have been as successful? No, because we tried," Craig said.
"And they wouldn't have found me, so that can't be as successful," Murray said.
The Web sites are geared toward very specific job seekers.
