'Geek Girls' Gather In Broomfield For Networking

Written by Jodi Brooks
BROOMFIELD, Colo. (CBS4) ― As the jobless numbers rise, so do the number of groups being created. One such group is call the "Geek Girls."

Rory Laiho is a Geek Girl.

"I've developed software in probably about six different programming languages," Laiho said.

She recently started a technology management consulting practice. Geek Girls are women in the information technology field. They met for their first networking meeting hosted by Sun Microsystems at their Broomfield campus.

Durinda Biesman is looking for work.

"It's an opportunity to learn, to meet new people and to get outside of your comfort zone," Biesman said.

Why networking works for these women is because they mostly work with men. Emma Nicoletti is a project manager for Level 3 and her whole team is men. Even though her job is thriving, she's very mindful of the unemployment rate and remembers the best advice she ever received.

"The best thing you can do is be educating yourself so that the next thing you're asked to do is something you already know about," Nicoletti said.

Nicoletti's B-plan is making cupcakes. She's also a pastry chef, but says the title she prefers is Geek Girl.

It should be no surprise the Geek Girls connected through Facebook to form their first chapter meeting where recruiters offered advice.

Yolanda Weimer works as a consultant and recruiter for IBM.

"Target your resume for the skills you have and then any recruiter that's a good recruiter can find you work as long as you target your resume to your skill set," Weimer said.

In this economy, supporting each other helps and now Geek Girls now have a network of their own.

The technology industry is not recession proof, but some companies are hiring. One of them is IBM. IMB Consultant and Recruiter Marcia Langdon was collecting business cards at the Geek Girls networking night. She said IBM is posting jobs on its Web site at www.IBM.com

More than 100 women showed up for the first Geek Girls meeting.
