We all want a healthy smile, but a tight wallet can mean cutting back on dental care. However, there is a way to save on the dentist and beat the recession.
A program at the University of Colorado Denver School of Dental Medicine helps aspiring dentists get experience and also helps patients get quality care for the lowest prices in town. Patients will definitely save money, but they'll also spend more time.
Dee Walker of Denver went to the school to get some tooth repair done. Emanouela Carlson did the work. Walker has been seeing Carlson for a couple of years, even though Carlson is a dental student.
"I come here for the dental care because I think it's the best," Walker said.
Through word-of-mouth, Walker learned about the school program. She gave it a try and has been trusting her teeth to students for ten years.
"You do get high-quality dental care here," Carlson said.
The typical savings is about 30 percent. A periodic exam at a private dentist can cost $40, at the dental school, it's $24. A filling can be over $200, but $96 if done by a student. A crown at the dentist runs nearly $1,000; at the school it's about half.
Retiree Edwin Hastings got crowns and five implants.
"It's considerably cheaper, but you do need to have more time than you do money," Hastings said.
That's because every step is supervised by a dentist on the faculty. They monitor dozens of students, so patients sometimes spend hours in the chair.
Students are grateful to have the experience and they believe the patients should be proud.
"What a great feeling for the patient to know they're helping educate a future dentist in the Denver community," Carlson said.
The school offers general dentistry, oral surgery, orthodontics and more. They also care for the elderly and children.
