About Reality Check: Raj Chohan focuses on matters of public policy and political persuasion. Online, he features his sources & an outline of his investigative steps on the pathway to his conclusions.
Democrat Barack Obama fired back at opponent John McCain, after a string of negative TV ads questioned the Illinois senator's judgment, patriotism, and character.
Obama's rebuttal is thirty-second spot is called "low road."
AD: He's practicing the politics of the past. Not exactly. Negative advertising plays a role in just about every major political campaign. It's the politics of the past, present, and future. And it's the same politics being used in this ad to rebut McCain.
AD: John McCain. His attacks on Barack Obama, not true false, baloney, the low road, baseless. This claim is true. All of the news outlets cited in the commercial were critical of McCain's "Celeb" attack ad that implied Obama skipped a visit with wounded U.S. troops in Germany, either because he wasn't allowed to take reporters with him or because he wanted to play basketball.
As reported in a previous Reality Check, we found McCain's claim in that ad to be misleading and unsupported by the facts.
AD: John McCain. Same old politics. Same failed policies. That's a matter of opinion. Senator McCain certainly shares some policy approaches with President Bush, particularly regarding the Iraq war. McCain criticized the president's handling of the war but has been a strident supporter of the surge strategy in Iraq. Like the president, McCain is also opposed to the Democratic leadership's call for a time-tabled pullout. But the Arizona senator also differs with the president on some major policy positions, most notably climate change.
AD: Barack Obama supports a $1,000 middle class tax cut. This claim is true. Obama supports low and middle class tax cuts paid for by raising taxes on higher income wage earners.
AD: An energy plan that takes on oil companies, develops alternative fuels, and breaks the grip of foreign oil. That's a campaign promise. Obama certainly has an energy plan that would focus on alternative biofuels, renewable energy, and energy conservation. Whether it could break the "grip of foreign oil" is a matter of hot debate in part because experts differ on the efficacy of renewable energy to replace fossil fuel, and because Obama is against both nuclear energy and expanded off-shore drilling, which his opponent favors.
Bottom line. It's not surprising to see Obama run a negative ad after getting hit with three different attack ads in a little more than a week. Both campaigns know it's a tight race and that negative ads work. Expect to see more caustic commercials in the weeks to come.
