Reality Check: Joan Fitz-Gerald's Ad Is 'Solid'

DENVER (CBS4) ― Former Colorado Senate President Joan Fitz-Gerald is running for Congress in the Democratic-leaning Second District which includes Boulder, Broomfield, Grand and Eagle Counties. Her recent TV ad highlights her leadership experience and legislative record.

The ad states: You can count on Joan Fitz-Gerald ... I'm for Joan. Joan changed Colorado

The campaign supports this claim by highlighting Fitz-Gerald's considerable legislative accomplishments. She led in the fight for Referendum C, led the Senate in passing a renewable energy package and helped secure funding for the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. Notably, she was the first woman to be president of the Colorado Senate.

Ad: She'll change America. Thanks to Joan Fitz-Gerald Colorado is a leader in renewable energy.

The claim is true in that Fitz-Gerald was a key proponent of renewable energy. She carried renewable energy legislation in the Senate and helped get it to the governor's desk. But she wasn't the only player. A lot of people had a hand in making that happen.

Ad: She's tenacious; she understands what middle class families are going through. She'll bring a sense of urgency to Congress

That's a campaign promise. Fitz-Gerald says she'll take her experience getting things done in the 120-day Colorado legislative session, and apply the same work ethic in Congress.

Ad: I'm For Joan ... I'm for Joan because she's for single-payer health care

Fitz-Gerald supports a mandatory single-payer health care system that covers everyone. Her opponent Jared Polis also wants a single-payer system that resembles an expanded Medicare style program. Will Shafroth wants a public-private health care plan that would be non-mandatory for adults.

Ad: She'll bring change to Washington. Joan's a fighter. Joan will work to get us out of Iraq now

Fitz-Gerald says she would cut off all funding for the Iraq war and force U.S. generals to make plans to get troops out of Iraq sooner rather than later. Her opponents favor a slower timetabled pullout, without cutting off funding.

It's a solid ad for Joan Fitz-Gerald. She has spent years in leadership in the Colorado legislature. This ad highlights her considerable experience.
