State Reps Bombarded With Calls About Bailout
LOVELAND, Colo. (CBS4) ―
Several groups came together at the state Capitol to protest the economic bailout Friday. They're against using taxpayer's money for the financial bailout.
The group included union representatives, members of the Green Party, and the Denver chapter of the International Socialist Organization.
Several lawmakers have said they're getting bombarded with calls from taxpayers against the plan, including Rep. Marilyn Musgrave's office.
Musgrave's staff says the calls have been non-stop this week from people weighing in on the bailout debate. The staff says most callers share Musgrave's position that taxpayers should not bail out Wall Street, despite President Bush insisting that the $700 billion is necessary to protect the entire U.S. economy.
"People are very interested in this, they are very concerned about what's going on with the economy and this proposed bailout plan," said Nancy Hunter, a Musgrave staff member. "What I've been hearing overwhelmingly from people is that they are not in support of the bailout."
Musgrave staffers estimate that a tiny fraction -- perhaps only 1 percent -- of the calls are from people who support the proposed bailout.
