Colo. House Committee Kills Tougher Seat Belt Bill

DENVER (AP) ― A Colorado House committee has killed a bill to toughen Colorado's seat belt law.

Opponents said the state should not be legislating personal safety.

The bill would have allowed officers to pull over drivers who are suspected of not wearing seat belts and write them a $75 ticket, $10 more than the current fine.

Currently, seat belts are mandatory, but authorities can only ticket drivers who have been pulled over for other traffic offenses and are then found not to be wearing one.
