Schaffer Yanks Ad, Mt. McKinley No Pikes Peak

DENVER (AP) ― Mount McKinley is no Pikes Peak, at least in Colorado political circles.

U.S. Senate candidate Bob Schaffer pulled his first television campaign ad after learning that it featured Alaska's Mount McKinley, also known as Denali, instead of Pikes Peak. The famous Colorado peak was also mentioned in the ad as Schaffer touted his connections to the state.

"Colorado is my life. I proposed to Maureen on top of Pikes Peak," Schaffer says of his wife in the ad, set to debut Wednesday in Colorado Springs and Grand Junction.

Schaffer campaign spokesman Dick Wadhams said his staff was assured by a media consulting firm, DMM Media of Washington, D.C., that a photo used in the ad was a stock Colorado Rocky Mountain photo.

"The editor was dead wrong," Wadhams said. "We're totally frustrated by this and we are correcting it with a shot of Pikes Peak."

A corrected version was posted on YouTube late Wednesday.

A message seeking comment at DMM Media was not immediately returned.

Schaffer, a former Republican congressman, is running against Democratic U.S. Rep. Mark Udall to replace GOP Sen. Wayne Allard, who is retiring.
